Drinking Swifts

Drinking Swifts (Apus apus).

Most of the time I just take my bike, pack my camera and drive to the North of Berlin.

That’s the place after a 20 min. bike ride where I find an abundance of Red-Backed shrikes, Yellowhammers, Corn Buntings, Pipets, Larks etc.

After knowing this area quite well I checked out other places near to see what I could find. So on one of my trips I discovered a small pond where every day the whole day through swifts and swallows come to drink water a catch flies. It was a spectacle to see how quick they fly, drink and on some images you could see that they even transported water maybe for their young. These are birds that do everything on the flight, drink, eat, sleep even copulate!!!

So I found it a challenge to try to photograph these beautiful birds. Like an famous Dutch photographer once said you have to photograph these birds in flight or else it is like photographing a carp fish in the grass.

I didn’t have a lot of time so I went out in a total of maybe 8 days over 3 a week time and photographed 4 or 5 hours a day. I wasn’t easy cause of the type of birds but also cause I couldn’t have the light in my back and had to stand knee deep in water with around 30 degrees Celsius.

Here are some of the images and next year ill be more prepared and ready to go on with the Swifts.
